Asphalt shingles are not without issues; in fact, they can age faster with weathering than other materials. So, it’s imperative to do everything you can to prevent them from deteriorating more rapidly than they would under normal circumstances.
Rogers Roofing offers some of the best practices to maximize the service life of asphalt roofing shingles:
Stripping Old Materials Away
You may be allowed to add a fresh layer of shingles over the old roof, but it’s far from ideal. Actually, it’s rarely advisable to do.
Tackling an overlay project can cause the new materials to stick to the old ones, increasing the chances of bulging and uneven wear. Plus, having two layers of asphalt shingles renders flashing application a bit trickier. Also, their collective weight could be too much to bear when your sheathing wasn’t engineered to support it. Even if no immediate problem manifests itself, the manufacturer might not bail you out in case of product failure when the old material wasn’t removed first.
Installing Them When It’s Neither Too Hot Nor Too Cold
Just like replacing windows, there’s a specific temperature range for installing asphalt shingle roofs. Anywhere between 40 degrees and 85 degrees is the optimum outdoor condition. The materials can become too brittle when applied while it’s below 40 degrees, and they can tear more easily when it’s above 85 degrees.
But then again, that doesn’t mean winter roof replacement isn’t attainable. Experienced roofers know what it takes to keep asphalt shingles properly warm prior to installation and handle them with care.
Ensuring Proper Attic Ventilation
Keeping your attic temperature as close to that of the outside as possible gives asphalt shingles the best chances of lasting a long time. Without proper ventilation, the underside of the sheathing can turn into a furnace during the hottest months, causing the materials to curl or blister. In the winter, a poorly ventilated attic sets the stage for ice damming.
Scheduling Professional Inspection Routinely
Most importantly, have your asphalt shingle roofing system professionally checked at least once a year. This way, you can spot and address signs of damage before leakage happens. It also keeps you informed about its condition, which becomes more critical as it ages.
